Red Comet is a red chocobo and a Critical Engagement type FATE enemy NPC in The Bozjan Southern Front from the massively multiplayer online video game series Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers. The character's difficulty made it notorious among players of the game, causing it to appear in memes mostly on Reddit and Twitter, similar to the Hogger from World of Warcraft.

Origin

On October 13th, 2020, patch 5.35 for Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers was released, introducing new content for the Blades of Gunnhildr relic weapons The Bozjan Southern Front, part of the Return to Ivalice crossover storyline from Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII. A certain Critical Engagement FATE, The Hunt for Red Choctober,^[5] introduced Red Comet, a red chocobo^[1][2][3] known for being extremely difficult to fight, terrorizing players with skills difficult to dodge such as Choco Meteorain (fight shown below).

Spread

Like the Hogger from World of Warcraft, Red Comet found its way to become a character type meme on Twitter and Reddit a few days later. For example, Twitter user @Ah1Lm42^[7] posted art of the Red Comet that made it look like a Jojo's Bizarre Adventure character (shown below, left). On October 14th, 2020, the Redditor matt9527 posted an object labeling meme about the Red Comet in /r/ffxiv,^[8] gaining over 60 points (shown below, right). The Final Fantasy XIV Twitter page^[6] also pokes fun at players who mention losing to Red Comet.

The character was also parodied in YouTube videos. For example, on October 17th, 2020, YouTuber Hatash Hyrunashi posted a parody of Monty Python and the Holy Grail about the Red Comet, gaining over 59,000 views (shown below, left). It also quickly became a challenge for streamers. For example, YouTuber GoldenTot posted a stream of the fight, gaining over 48,000 views (shown below, right).
