About

The Twinning also known as the song A Long Fall is a leitmotif remix used in a dungeon run The Twinning from the soundtrack of popular MMORPG game Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers by composer Masayoshi Soken. In the summer of 2020, the song became a subject dancing-related videos and remixes.

Origins

The early access of Final Fantasy XIV's expansion, Shadowbringers, was released July 2nd, 2019.[1] After completing the main 5.0 storyline for Shadowbringers, a level 80 dungeon, The Twinning is introduced by talking to an NPC. The Twinning's song known as A Long Fall has become a leitmotif rock remix of Syrcus Tower (Crystal Tower raid series from A Realm Reborn) and Omega's theme (Omega raid series from Stormblood).

Spread

In the beginning of 2020, "The Long Fall" theme from The Twinning began becoming a popular subject of dancing-related memes and videos. Twitter user KalebPrime[2] tweeted a wojak meme on Valentine's Day 2020 comparing Final Fantasy XIV fans and World of Warcraft fans, writing as he quoted on Twitter "The absolute state of World of Warcraft vs FFXIV" (shown below).

On June 9th, 2020, Alex Moukala replied to a tweet from Masayoshi Soken with clip of himself dancing to The Twinning[3] (shown below). Soken later responded to Alex Moukala's dancing[4] and said to him in English, "Because of stayhome, I have high IL unwanted flesh attached to my belly. I'll have to do that dance when I listen to that song too!_". Alex Moukala later "posted on Reddit's r/ffxiv[5] to talk about Soken's reply on his dance.

On August 4th, 2020, Twitter user MyJojob[6] tweeted an edited Car.shearer's Dance meme of Carson Shearer dancing to The Twinning, gaining over 29,000 retweets and 46,000 likes (shown below).

Dear fucking god, you make Bill-Stan look like the patron saint of anime.
The song is a compilation of two songs in previous content, and was given a nice remix. Plus, the dungeon, itself, is a series of callbacks, even fighting a final raid boss to a remix of one of its themes.
