On September 16h, 2022 the TikToker @cecilieambrosiuss[1] posted a video of her husband smiling at the camera, not aware of the red dress[2] filter covering his whole body. The post gained over 29 million views and 4.8 million likes in five days.

After the @cecilieambrosiuss video went viral, other creators started to post content using the red dress filter to make fun of friends and family members, accumulating 2.8 million videos on TikTok as of September 20th, 2022. The trend is accompanied by a sped-up version of Lana Del Rey's song "Summertime Sadness."[3] The sound has 157,000 videos on the platform, such as a September 18th, 2022 upload by the Brazilian influencer @virginiafonseca[4] showing her child being recorded with the filter. In two days, the video gained over 9.4 million views and 1.6 million likes.
