Rero Rero (レロレロ)

About

Rero Rero refers to a memorable scene in the popular long running Shōnen manga series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure wherein the character Kakyoin Noriaki is licking a cherry in an unusual manner. Rero Rero (レロレロ) is the sound effect Kakyoin makes as he rolls the cherry around with his tongue.^[1]

Origin

The scene originated in the 137th chapter of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure titled Cannibalistic Temperance (Yellow Temperance (2) in the Bunkoban version) which was published in 1990. In the scene, antagonist Rubber Soul who was impersonating as Kakyoin attempted to kill main protagonist Jotaro Kujo by pushing him off a building. After failing to do so, Rubber Soul explained that he was just pretending and proceeded to lick a cherry in an unusual manner (shown below, left). Later in chapter 139, it is revealed that the real Kakyoin also eats his cherry in the same unusual manner, prompting Jotaro to be disgusted. The scene was later animated in the 9th episode of David Production's adaptation of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders which first aired on May 30th, 2014 (shown below, right).

The scene has become the subject of fanart and parodies on sites such as DeviantArt^[5] and Pixiv.^[6] On April 12th, 2009, DeviantArt user 0marchhare0 submitted his artwork titled "rerorero" depicting the memorable scene from the manga which gathered over 1.900 views, 96 favorites, and 15 comments as of June 6th, 2016.^[2]

On May 19th, 2013, Youtube user シモンイスガブリエル uploaded a video titled RERO RERO RERO RERO 1 HOUR which is a remix song using assets from the 1998 JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fighting game developed by Capcom and background music taken from a Touhou fan video titled Yukareimu's mayim mayim. Within 3 years, the video gathered over 160.000 views (shown below, left). On May 30th, 2014, Youtube user Warmelon uploaded clips of cherry licking scenes taken from the 2014 David Production's anime adaptation of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders which gathered over 476.000 views within 3 years (below, right).

Also on May 30th Youtube user VonLodsch uploaded a clip taken at the very end of the 9th episode of Stardust Crusaders which gathered over 114.000 views within 3 years (shown below, left). The video was subsequently shared on the PlayItAgainSam subreddit on December 3rd, 2014, which gathered 103 point (93% upvoted) and 8 comments prior to being archived.^[3] On June 13th, 2014, niconico Douga user カオスメニュー uploaded a remix video titled RERO ZONE which gathered over 29.000 views within 3 years.^[4] The video was subsequently reuploaded on Youtube by user Rlcemaster3 on June 15th, 2014, which gathered over 383.000 views within 3 years (shown below, right).
