The format is a reference to Panzer of the Lake format and gained popularity in August 2019.

Origin

On August 13th, 2019, episode seven of the anime series Magical Sempai (Tejina Senpai) premiered.^[1] In one scene of the episode, the main character Senpai is attempting to escape from bonds while being submerged underwater, with the her Assistant ensuring her safety.

Spread

On August 14th, 2019, Redditor oniikami posted a two-panel meme based on the scene in the /r/animemes subreddit, referencing the Panzer of the Lake meme format. The post gained over 29,400 upvotes in three days (shown below).^[2]

In the following days, the format gained a significant spread in the subreddit and other anime communities, with multiple notable examples posted by the users.
