Sex Was Invented is a Twitter snowclone in which a Twitter user will insert a celebrity or musician after the phrase "sex was invented by" in response to a religious Tweet posted in late July 2019 claiming that god created sex for "marriage, between a husband and wife."

Origin

On July 19th, 2019, Twitter user @livingforjc^[1] tweeted, "Sex was created by God, for marriage, between a husband and wife. Not for a boyfriend and girlfriend that are dating" (shown below). The tweet gained over 49,200 likes and 14,500 retweets in five days.

Spread

On July 20th, 2019, various Twitter users responded directly to the tweet to dispute her claim. That day, Twitter user @AGENlUS^[2] retweeted @livingforjc saying that , "Sex was invented by Trey Songz" (shown below, left). The tweet gained over 70 likes in four days. The next day, other Twitter users began claiming that sex was invented by celebrities and musicians. Twitter user, @ImpPoster^[3] claimed, "Sex was invented by Zeus when he transformed himself into the world's hottest swan" (shown below, center). That same day, Twitter users began adding lyrics to the phrasal template. Twitter user @INDIEWASHERE^[4] tweeted, "sex was invented by lana del rey in 2012 when she wrote down the words 'my pussy tastes like pepsi cola'" (shown below, right). The tweet garnered over 20,600 likes and 5,400 retweets in three days.
