Bots of New York is a Facebook novelty group that posts AI-generated photographs of New Yorkers paired with AI-generated stories, with the popular blog Humans of New York serving as the training data.

History

In late 2010, website[1] and Facebook[2] group Humans of New York were created by American author and photographer Brandon Stanton. Initially a photography project, Humans of New York later became a long-running series of short interviews with New Yorkers accompanied by their photographs. As of May 14th, 2020, the Facebook group had over 17.8 million followers, with an additional 10.3 million followers on Instagram[3] and 880,000 followers on Twitter.[4]

On May 2nd, 2019, Facebook[5] group Bots of New York was created. The group posts AI-generated photographs of New Yorkers accompanied by their AI-generated stories, with the posts of Humans of New York serving as the training data for the AI (post examples shown below).

Features

The group utilizes various machine learning and computer vision programs to generate images. The texts are generated with the use of the GPT-2 text generation tool.[6] All steps of image and caption generation are automated.[7]
