Steam Game Logo and Background Customization refers to a feature of Steam app that allows users to customize the logo and background of video games they have in their library. In January 2021, the feature became a popular tool for creating humorous combinations of backgrounds and video game logos.

History

On October 30th, 2019, video game distribution platform Steam updated the design of the library page.^[1] Among other features, users were now able to customize logo and background for video games in their library (example shown below).^[2] Custom covers for games displayed in the library grid could also be set.

Features

The customization feature can be accessed by selecting any video game a user has in their Steam library and right-clicking on the header image. In the dropdown menu, options for setting a custom background and a custom logo and for adjusting the logo position are available.

Highlights

The featured did not see viral popularity as a tool for creating humorous combinations of logos and backgrounds until January 2021. On January 18th, 2021, Twitter^[3] user @pisschamp posted four images in which Yakuza 0 background was combined with the logos of Far Cry 3, Team Fortress 2, Half-Life and Undertale (images shown below). The tweet received over 3,300 retweets and 18,200 likes in four days.

In the same thread, several Twitter users responded with their custom combinations, including tweets by @Ang_e_lic^[4] and @spliffdonk^[5] both of which received over 1,300 likes in four days (shown below, left and right).

On January 20th, 2021, Twitter^[6] user @StormYorha posted an image which combined the Bayonetta logo with and image of Brown M&M (shown below). The post received over 14,400 retweets and 95,400 likes in three days.

Following the post, the trend of making humorous combinations with the customization tool gained notable popularity among users on Twitter, with a number of viral versions being posted in the following days,
