About

Your Item Has Been Sold On Steam Marketplace is a catchphrase used in reaction image and video memes in which a person sarcastically implies they're feeling incredibly wealthy after selling an item on the online gaming platform Steam for pennies.

Origin

Steam has given users the ability to sell items via the Community Marketplace since 2012.[1] Users will often utilize this feature for selling cosmetic upgrades that, if common, are worth only a few cents. On March 29th, 2021, Twitter user @penquinn_[2] posted a GIF of Vince McMahon Smelling Money with the caption, "Your item has been successfully sold on the Steam marketplace for $0.03," gaining over 10,000 retweets and 54,000 likes in roughly eight months (shown below).

Spread

On March 30th, 2021, the same GIF was posted to /r/Steam,[3] where it gained over 46,000 points in six months. Over the following months, similar posts appeared across social media with a different GIF sarcastically representing how rich a person felt after receiving a few cents. For example, on August 11th, iFunny[4] user Earlchickenearl posted a picture of Huell rolling in money with the caption (shown below, left). On November 18th, Redditor lucasharibo posted a picture of a cat appearing to be sitting with a glass of wine with the caption to /r/memes,[5] gaining over 78,000 points in less than 24 hours (shown below, right). This led to a thread about the memes to get posted to /r/OutOftheLoop.[6]
