The Stink Jar, also known as @smellyjar1, refers to a TikTok account oh which the admin possesses a jar dubbed "The Stink Jar" that they fill with disgusting ingredients, ranging from food to bodily fluids and other grotesque items. They've allegedly left it fermenting for over seven years. The TikTok account started in June 2023 but gained significant discourse and reactions in October 2024. Before the creation of the TikTok page, Reddit posts about a similar seven-year Stink Jar surfaced online.

History

On September 3rd, 2023, Redditor^[6] thewalkindude shared a post to the subreddit /r/eatityoufuckingcoward, showing a jar that was alleged to contain seven years worth of waste, ranging from poop to roadkill, all to create the stinkiest smell possible. The post received over 6,000 upvotes in a year (shown below). It is currently the first known upload of the post. Similar posts and reposts went viral on other subreddits^[7]^[8] in the following days.

On September 4th, TikToker^[1] @smellyjar1 (the stink jar) posted a video of a glass jar filled with unknown substances. The text overlay alleged, "7 years ago I started adding pieces of every nasty thing I could find into this jar from roadkill to poop just to see what would happen." The video received over 262,800 plays and 3,300 likes in a year (shown below). It's the first still-accessible video on the account.

The account achieved further virality when it shared a TikTok^[2] on July 5th, 2024, with a title reading, "pee and poop burger into the jar." Over three months, the video received roughly 243,500 plays and 6,000 likes (shown below).

On October 9th, The Stink Jar shared a TikTok^[3] with a text caption reading, "menstruation mixed with baby gravy and pee sediment," gaining over 383,800 plays and 12,100 likes in 13 days (shown below).

Online Reactions

Reactions to The Stink Jar surfaced en masse in October 2024 after the account's then-recent virality. For instance, on October 20th, TikToker^[4] @tumortasticc shared a video in which he discussed The Stink Jar, effectively making a video similar to a Don't Google meme. His video received over 2.5 million plays and 260,200 likes in two days (shown below).
