About
This Meme Does Not Exist is a feature on meme generation site Imgflip which uses artificial intelligence to create image macros using the site's top 40 templates. The resulting image macros are often surreal and nonsensical, leading to them being shared on social media. The generator's name is a play on This Person Does not Exist.
History
The site uses a generator code built by dylanwenzlau,[2] who outlined how it was created in a post on April 18th, 2019. On March 5th, 2020, journalist Taylor Lorenz[1] tweeted that Imgflip had created an AI meme generator[6] employing Wenzlau's work (shown below).
Online Presence
After Lorenz tweeted about the generator, Twitter users began posting some of the creations with the generator, often commenting upon the comedy in their nonsensical nature. User @kxthleen[3] posted several examples in a tweet on March 6th (shown below).
The site began growing more popular in late April of 2020, as users shared creations from the generator. For example, on April 29th, 2020, user @KendriccTon[4] posted a meme that made sense, gaining over 900 retweets and 2,500 likes (shown below, left). On April 28th, user @hellakyra[5] wrote, "i'm so high i've been laughing at AI-generated memes for like 2 hours. they're so much better than anything man has ever made," gaining over 90 retweets and 630 likes (shown below, right).
