"Your Favorite Character" Gimmick Accounts refers to a series of Facebook and Twitter gimmick accounts that post memes in which a certain single action, most commonly murder, is performed towards characters from various franchises, with all memes utilizing a single template. Gaining initial popularity with The Backrooms and Fukouna Shoujo 03 gimmick accounts, the trend achieved notable popularity in May 2021.

History

On May 27th, 2019, Facebook^[1] page Your Favorite Character is Stuck in the Backrooms, the first known gimmick page specializing in posting images of characters in a precarious position, was created. On the same day, the page posted^[2] its first meme, an image in which Mr. X from the Resident Evil 2 Remake was edited into The Backrooms (shown below left). In the following months, the page posted images of characters from various franchises photoshopped into The Backrooms. For example, on June 12th, 2019, the page uploaded^[3] an image of Keanu Reeves photoshopped into the backrooms that gained over 820 reactions and 200 shares in two years (shown below, right).

In the following years, more similar pages were created on Facebook and, starting in 2021, Twitter. For example, on January 18th, 2020, the Facebook gimmick page Your Favorite Character Goes Into the Machine was created, posting Fukouna Shoujo 03 edits. On November 17th, 2020, Facebook^[4] page Goro Satoru kills your favorite character was made, posting edits of characters being murdered by Jujutsu Kaisen character Goro Satoru. On April 30th, 2021, the Facebook^[5] gimmick page Omni-Man Claps Your Favorite Character's Head was created, followed by Omni-Man Kills Your Fav bot Twitter^[6] account created on May 11th (examples shown below).

Precursors

Prior to the popularity of "Your Favorite Character" gimmick pages, separate meme templates were used in a way similar to the trend, with characters being edited into the template and a certain upcoming action towards them being implied. One notable example is the series of SFW Fukouna Shoujo 03 edits that implied that events of the GIF would happen to the characters placed into the apparatus.

Features

"Your Favorite Character" gimmick accounts post memes created from a single template, with various fictional characters edited in. The templates are usually well-known scenes from TV series, anime and other media, with the situation depicted most commonly implying immediate death for the character.

Traffic

As of May 28th, 2021, the Twitter gimmick account Omni-Man Kills your fav (@Omni_Kills_Fav) was the most-subscribed page within the genre with over 32,400 followers. Facebook^[7] page Tom holding your fav character's Booba had over 31,800 followers. Other notable pages include Facebook^[8] page Gojo Satoru kills your favorite character (over 9,400 followers) and Omni-Man claps your favorite character's head (over 6,700 followers).

Makima's "Bang"

Makima's Bang refers to a panel from the manga series Chainsaw Man in which character Makima kills character Power by obliterating her torso with an invisible force seemingly channeled through her index finger. Online, the panel has been edited in various ways, with Power often replaced with characters from various franchises.

The Backrooms

The Backrooms is a creepypasta inspired by a comment on a picture of an "unsettling room" on 4chan's /x/ board. The comment inspired an expanded creepypasta and YouTube videos reading the creepypasta.

Fukouna Shoujo 03

Fukouna Shoujo 03 (Japanese: 不幸な少女０３, "Unfortunate girl 03" in English), also known as vvindows and vvindows me.gif, is an anime GIF by Japanese visual artist vvindowsme depicting a young girl in a bathing suit being restrained by a machine and flayed alive. Online, the GIF gained much notoriety for its used as a shock image.

The Dock of Shame

The Dock of Shame refers to a series of memes based on a memorable scene from the 2007 animated reality show series Total Drama in which characters get eliminated and sent to the "dock of shame" from which they depart from the show. Starting in June 2020, the fictional location saw frequent use in memes, mainly through the efforts of an eponymous gimmick Twitter account.
