About

Snapchat Baby Filter refers to a photographic effect found on the social media application Snapchat. The filter smooths the user's facial features and enlarges their eyes so that they resemble an infant (similar to the Snapchat Gender Change Filter).

Origin

On May 8th, 2019, Snapchat released the baby filter to users.[4] That day, YouTuber Jypsyvloggin posted a how-to video, explaining the instructions for using the filter. Wtihin 24 six days, the post received more than 48,000 views (shown below).

Spread

That day, people began sharing photographs using the filter. Twitch streamer Chris Melberger tweeted,[1] "haven’t been on snapchat in forever but apparently there’s a baby filter. so here’s what a baby with an amish beard looks like." The tweet received more than 130 retweets and 4,100 likes in six days (shown below, left).

Over the next week, people began posting images of the filter being used on pop culture figures. On May 10th, Instagram [3] account @friendsminute posted an image of the cast of Friends using the filter. The post received more than 6,000 likes in five days (shown below, center). The following day, Twitter[2] user @majormarvelking tweeted a series of images of the characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The tweet received more than 30,000 retweets and 51,000 likes in less than one week (shown below, right).

Several media outlets covered the filter, including PopBuzz,[5] StayHipp[6] and more.
