About
Some Guy, The Guy, also known as It's All About the Details, refers to a humorous fan art trend in which artists depict two similar characters, one generic and another only slightly altered by adding one or few key details, thus creating a well-recognized character from a certain fandom. The format achieved virality on X / Twitter in November 2024.
Origin
On July 31st, 2024, X[1] user @SanShotto posted an image of two similar female characters, one representing a generic blonde girl and the other, mostly the same same but wearing a magnifying glass hairpin, representing VTuber Amelia Watson. The post (shown below) garnered over 1,100 reposts and 12,000 likes in four months.
On August 1st, 2024, X[2] user @raphelkaegi posted a similar humorous fan art of VTuber Mori Calliope which received over 1,800 reposts and 23,000 likes in four months.
The format did not see further spread until early November 2024. On November 3rd, X[3] user @heartiaac posted a similar fan art depicting two similar character designs, one generic and the other with only the addition of eyelashes, representing the Alien Stage character Ivan (shown below). The post, captioned, "it's all about the details," received over 14,000 reposts and 96,000 likes on X / Twitter in nine days.
Spread
On November 7th, 2024, X[4] user @IronicOrange posted a Hetalia fan art based on the format which received over 890 reposts and 4,700 likes in five days (shown below).
The format saw further spread on November 8th, with several examples going viral. For example, a version featuring Vocaloid character Kagamine Rin by artist @rintoaster received over 3,400 reposts and 30,000 likes on X[5] in four days.
A meme featuring a simplistic sketch of the Jujutsu Kaisen character Satoru Gojo (shown below), posted by user @psychxbby, gained over 3,800 reposts and 55,000 likes on X[6] in the same period.
More fan art memes based on the format went viral on X / Twitter in the following days. For example, on November 9th, artist @mintyteah posted a Five Nights at Freddy's meme based on the format that garnered over 14,000 reposts and 182,000 likes on X[7] in three days (shown below).
Versions that parodied the format by replacing the supposedly generic version with a very recognizable, insignificantly different version of a famous character, also saw spread,[8][9] particularly those featuring non-human characters such as Shadow the Hedgehog and Jogo.
