On April 4th, 2025, A Minecraft Movie was released in theaters. The movie features Jack Black as Steve and Jason Momoa as Garrett Garrison. The two characters team up in the film and share many scenes, including a scene where they are forced to enter a 69-like position while flying on an elytra.

Just prior to the public release of the film, social media users began shipping the characters and making memes about their relationship in the film. One of the earliest known examples was posted by X^[1] user @fartpog on April 3rd, 2025, in which he posted "Why was there yaoi" as a quote-repost of his own prior post announcing that he was going to see the film, garnering over 141,000 likes in six days.

Memes and fan content about the Steve x Garrett ship continued to appear online over the following days. Several Steve x Garrett stories have been posted to Wattpad^[2] and ao3^[3] since the film's release.

On April 4th, 2025, X^[4] user @ZEBSTRIKAAA posted a photo of themselves writing fanfiction during the film, writing, "I fucking wrote steve x garrett in the fucking theater," garnering over 27,000 likes in five days.

On April 6th, X^[5] user @robster880 posted a piece of work-in-progress art showing Steve and Garrett embracing each other closely, garnering over 10,000 likes in three days.
