As a Child, I Yearned for the Mines refers to a line from the 2025 film A Minecraft Movie based on the video game Minecraft, which references The Children Yearn for the Mines meme. In April 2025, the line appeared in Minecraft movie brainrot memes alongside Minecraft movie quotes, while the scene itself became an exploitable meme and inspired edits referencing various games and films.
Origin
On November 19th, 2024, the official trailer for the 2025 film A Minecraft Movie premiered on YouTube[1] and other social media platforms. The trailer opened with a scene of Jack Black's character Steve saying, "As a child I yearned for the mines," which is a reference to The Children Yearn for the Mines meme. The trailer (shown below) garnered over 26 million views on YouTube and 16.3 million views on X[2] / Twitter in five months.

On November 19th, 2024, X[3] user @SpIinterCal quoted the line in a post, commenting, "okay guys maybe this actually is the greatest film ever." More posts highlighting the reference went viral in late November 2024, including a comment[4] by Minecraft YouTuber Quackity.
On November 21st, 2024, Tenor[5] user LazerFisch posted a GIF caption meme based on the line (shown below).
Starting in March 2025, the scene saw usage as an exploitable format in memes, with users altering the line and combining it with edited images from the trailer.
For instance, on March 18th, 2025, X[6] user @RainingBat posted a meme about the upcoming film The Batman Part II that gained over 50 reposts and 440 likes in one month (shown below).
On April 8th, 2025, X[7] user @MenLover221 posted a Fortnite meme based on the format that garnered over 1,200 reposts and 17,000 likes in two days.
More image caption memes based on the scene were circulated on X / Twitter in April 2025, with users editing still images from the trailer to reference various media.
Additionally, the line saw use in Minecraft memes on TikTok and YouTube alongside other Minecraft movie quote memes, such as Flint and Steel and The Nether.
