5-Minute Hacks is a web series of short do-it-yourself tricks and life hack videos. The series' YouTube channel has the third-most subscribers on the platform. In summer 2019, the channel went viral with a series of jokes about a video that explained how to "make an egg bigger than before."

History

On April 5th, 2016, 5-Minute Hacks posted its first video on Facebook. The video, "Nail polish marbled flower pots," received more than 811,000 views, 6,100 shares, 6,000 reactions and 200 comments in three years (shown below).



On November 15th, 5-Minute Hacks launched its YouTube channel. The following day, the channel posted its first video, "5 essential DIY hacks that you need to know." Within three years, the post received more than 76,000 views (shown below, left).

The following year, on December 3rd, 2017, they published the video "42 HOLY GRAIL HACKS THAT WILL SAVE YOU A FORTUNE." The post received more than 270 million views in less than two years (shown below, right). As of 2019, it is the channels most popular video.



Highlights

"Bigger Than Before" Egg Video

On May 5th, 2019, the channel published the video "22 CRAZY HOME SCIENCE TRICKS YOU'VE NEVER SEEN." In the video, one of the "science tricks" includes making an egg bigger by soaking it in vinegar and maple syrup. The post received more than 3.2 million views in less than three months (shown below).



On July 25th, 2019, Twitter[1] user @chipspopandabar tweeted the clip from the video with the caption "please watch this extremely bizarre facebook craft video." The tweet received more than 2.2 million views, 41,000 likes and 11,000 retweets in 24 hours (shown below).

Following the post, people made jokes on Twitter[2] about the phrase "bigger than before." Twitter user @hollyjunesmith tweeted a parody of the poem This Is Just To Say by William Carlos Williams. The post received more than 5,000 likes and 500 retweets in 24 hours (shown below, left).

Throughout the day, others shared variations of the meme (examples below, center and right).

Several media outlets covered the meme, including New York,[3] Nylon,[4] AV Club[5] and more.
