Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake is a spin-off of the Cartoon Network show Adventure Time created by Pendleton Ward. The show follows the characters Fionna and Cake, who were originally introduced in Adventure Time as part of a character named the Ice King's fanfiction. The show is set to premier on Max in August 2023.
History
Adventure Time is a show created by Pendleton Ward and first released on Cartoon Network in April 2010. The show followed the story of a human boy named Finn and a talking stretchy dog named Jake as they go on adventures in a post-apocalyptic magical world. The show grew to gather a cult following over the course of its nine seasons.
The characters Fionna and Cake are genderswapped versions of Finn and Jake and originally debuted in the third season of Adventure Time. The characters were initially conceptualized as fan fiction written by the Ice King, and the episode even featured an altered title sequence (seen below).[1]
On August 17th, 2021, HBO Max announced[2] that Fionna and Cake would be featured in their own spin-off show, set to debut on August 31st, 2023. The show was described as follows;
"Fionna and Cake – with the help of the former Ice King, Simon Petrikov – embark on a multiverse-hopping adventure and journey of self-discovery. All the while a powerful new antagonist determined to track them down and erase them from existence lurks in the shadows.”
On July 20th, 2023, Max released a trailer for Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake, gathering over 300,000 views in a day on YouTube[3] (seen below).
Online Presence
Various internet users reacted to the trailer for Fionna and Cake, with Twitter[4] user @advtimemoments posting screencaps from the trailer on June 20th, 2023, showing Marshal Lee (genderswapped Marceline) and Prince Gumball (genderswapped Princess Bubblegum). The post gathered over 50,000 likes in a day (seen below, left). Also on June 20th, the voice actor for Marceline, Olivia Roseolson, posted a show poster to her Instagram,[5] gathering over 17,000 likes in a day (seen below, right).
On July 20th, Twitter[6] user @itsnicktendo posted a tweet commending the new spin-off show for continuing the story left off by Adevnture Time instead of simply rebooting the show with different characters. The tweet gathered over 18,000 likes in a day (seen below).
As a longtime fan, I like that Adventure Time is increasingly unfriendly to newcomers. I’m glad it hasn’t had to reboot its lore and is continuing to tell a story that started 13(?!) years ago.
