My Deer Friend Nokotan / Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan

Overview

My Deer Friend Nokotan, or, Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan, is a manga and anime series written by Oshioshio and directed by Masahiko Ohta respectively. The series is about a deer-girl hybrid named Nokotan who drags high schooler and delinquent Torako Koshi into her strange adventures after Koshi saves her from some power lines. The manga premiered in Shōnen Magazine Edge in November 2019 and moved to the Magazine Pocket website in December 2023. An anime series was announced in March 2024 and was set for release that July. In May 2024, the theme song for the anime series was shared and went viral on social media, inspiring memes.

History

Manga

The first chapter of Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan premiered on November 15th, 2019 in Shōnen Magazine Edge. It was serialized in the magazine until December 2023, when the magazine ended, after which it was moved to the Magazine Pocket website. Five volumes collecting the chapters of the manga have also been released, with the fifth volume releasing in Japan on May 9th, 2024.

Anime Series

On March 13th, 2024, a Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan anime series was announced, with a scheduled release date of July 7th, 2024.^[1]

On March 29th, the It's Anime YouTube^[2] page posted the first trailer for the series, garnering over 202,000 views in two months (shown below, left). On May 27th, the TWIN ENGINE YouTube^[3] channel published a trailer for the series, which also previews the theme song, "Shikairo Days," aka "Deer-Colored Days," garnering over 263,000 views in four days (shown below).

Online Presence

On March 12th, 2024, the @shikanoko_pr TikTok^[4] account opened to advertise the upcoming anime series, garnering over 11,000 followers in two months.

"Shikairo Days"

Following the release of the second trailer for My Deer Friend Nokotan_, the theme song, "Shikairo Days," went viral online. On May 28th, 2024, the @shikanokopr TikTok^[5] page posted a video of Toshi Torako dancing to the song, garnering over a million views in three days (shown below).

On May 30th, TikTokers^[6][7] @xyztzy12 and @yasainegi0 posted videos about the catchiness of the song, garnering over 340,000 views and 220,000 views respectively in a day (shown below, left and right).

On the same day, YouTuber^[8] It's Anime posted a one-hour loop of Torako dancing to the song, garnering over 120,000 views in a day (shown below).
