About

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon is a spin-off series of Pokémon video games which more closely resemble a roguelike video game than the traditional RPGs of the main game. In the games, the player navigates randomly-generated dungeons as a Pokémon, battling other Pokémon who speak human language.

History

The first two games in the series, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue Team were released in November of 2005 in Japan and on September 18th, 2006 in North America. The games released on the Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance.[1]

There have been several sequels in the Mystery Dungeon series, including the paired games Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness and Super Mystery Dungeon. The series has sold over 13 million copies collectively.[2]

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon DX

On January 9th, 2020, the Pokémon company held a Nintendo Direct in which the company announced Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, a Switch remake of the 2006 Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team games. A playable demo was available on the Switch later that day.

Online Presence

The games generated a passionate, albeit less broad fanbase than the mainline games. The game's subreddit gained over 24,000 subscribers since its creation in August of 2011.[3] A meme page for the games, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Heaven, has acquired over 4,800 members on Facebook[4] since its creation on January 28th, 2018. The series has also inspired fan art, featuring a bevy of submissions on DeviantArt under the Pokémonmysterydungeon tag.[5] On October 17th, 2019, YouTuber JRPokeTrainer98 uploaded a video about the series' history gaining over 172,000 views (shown below, left). After the announcement of DX, YouTuber AfroSenjuXL posted a video comparing the original game to the DX demo, gaining over 120,000 views (shown below, right).
