On August 17th, 2023, Chinese game publisher NetEase announced^[1] Project Mugen, an upcoming open-world role-playing video game set in an urban environment. The game was officially unveiled at the Gamescom 2023 gaming conference on August 23rd, 2023 (release trailer shown below),^[2] with the pre-registration opening on the same day.

The announcement of the game was followed by viral reactions on social media. On August 24th, 2023, X^[3] account @Genshinmem reposted the trailer for the game, describing it as "GTA + Zenless Zone Zero + Spider-Man." The post (shown below) received over 6,600 reposts and 49,800 likes in one day. The game saw more comparisons to an anime version of Grand Theft Auto and Spider-Man in the media.^[4][5]

Later that day, X^[6] user @kishkybe described the upcoming game as a product for those who can't afford a gaming console, with the tweet gaining over 1,400 reposts and 30,500 likes (shown below, left).
