Rare is an English video game development company founded in 1985. A Microsoft subsidiary, the company was most notable for their partnership with Nintendo, which led them to become a second-party developer under the publisher resulting in the Donkey Kong Country series, and the creation of franchises such as Banjo-Kazooie and Killer Instinct.
History
Rare was founded by Tim and Chris Stamper in 1985 as the successor to their company Ultimate Play the Game, which developed games for the ZX Spectrum computer that was widely popular in their home country of England. After
Microsoft Era
On September 22, 2002, Rare was purchased by Microsoft for $375 million and were made a first party developer for Microsoft's Xbox console. Under Microsoft, the company released a number of original titles.
