Surprised Rarity refers to an image of the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic character Rarity looking at a newspaper in shock. The moment has been used in various image macros, reaction images, videos and exploitables.

Origin

On March 31st, 2012, the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic episode "Ponyville Confidential" aired.^[1] In the episode, Rarity discovers that the school newspaper that the secrets of her diary were being published. Upon seeing the secrets, she yells, "I'll destroy her!"

Spread

Before the episode's airdate, clips of Rarity looking at the paper and saying "I'll destroy her" began circulating on YouTube. On March 24th, 2012, YouTuber^[2] swapert22 the clip of her saying the line. As of November 2017, the clip (shown below) has more than 282,000 views.

Several days later, on April 5th, DeviantArt ^[3] Dianima86 posted a variation on the moment with Rarity showing sharp teeth and the line "I'll Destroy Her" and flames in the picture. The image (shown below, left) received more than 2,100 views in five years.

Later that year, on October 15th, Derpibooru^[4] user MrThumbsup posted (shown below, right) a three-panel comic in which Rarity sees the headline "Scientists say: Memes Unfashionable!"

On December 31st, 2013, a Meme Generator^[5] user posted a template of the moment with a white background. The template has more than 170 posts in four years.
