Part of a series on Joker (2019 Film). [View Related Entries]

About

That's Right Murray refers to an exploitable phrasal template series featuring an image of Joaquin Phoenix from 2019's Joker standing in the studio audience of the Live! With Murray Franklin show associated with quotes following the structure, "That's right Murray, I X," the "X" being an opinion or joke. The format is popular on Twitter, first appearing around January 2021. Oftentimes, the image of Phoenix is photoshopped to fit the context of the snowclone phrase. The quote is not actually spoken in the film.

Origin

The exact phrase "That's right, Murray," is not actually spoken in 2019's Joker. It is unknown who was the first to use it, but an early example dates back to Twitter[1] on March 23rd, 2020, in which user @hereliesthighs posted an image of Joaquin in Joker makeup from the film with the caption, "That’s right Murray, I’m ridin with Biden *honk honk*." On January 5th, 2021, Twitter[2] user @HandsomeIncel posted an image from the film of Phoenix standing in the crowd of Live! With Murray Franklin from a fantasy sequence in the film, captioned, "That's right Murray. I get an order of stuffed plain mini-bagels every morning" (shown below). This is the earliest example of the phrase used in connection with this image.

Groovy Tony @Handsomelncel ... "That's right Murray. I get an order of stuffed plain mini-bagels every morning."

The image comes from a fantasy sequence in the film where Joaquin's character Arthur, who is also the Joker, imagines being called out at Murray's talk show and asked on stage (shown below).

Spread

The format spread slowly over the course of 2021. On January 21st, 2021, Facebook[3] page Cinema Bastards posted a version of the meme referencing Criterion Collection movies, garnering over 150 shares and offering the first example of the format outside Twitter (shown below). The trend continued to spread across Twitter over the next six months without producing any notable viral hits.

"That's right Murray! I blind buy Criterions and don't even watch them. Just like to look at em on my shelf."

On July 2nd, Twittter[4] user @jinxpr0 posted a photoshopped version of the image showing Phoenix holding up an image of Shroomjak, captioned, "That's right murray i made my own wojak" (shown below). The post gained over 19,000 likes and 2,100 retweets in six days.

jinx @jinxpr0 That's right murray i made my own wojak

This tweet increased the popularity of the trend over the following days, inspiring a number of new variations on Twitter[5][6] (examples shown below).
