The Backpack Kid Making Bad Beats, also known as The Backpack Kid Making Bad Music or The Backpack Kid's Goofy Ahh Beats, refers to internet personality The Backpack Kid (@thebackpackkid) making perceivably bad hip-hop beats on TikTok Live. The livestreams surfaced in late 2022 and continued into early 2023, inspiring many Goofy Ahh related comments in the chat and ultimately prompting TikTokers and meme creators to screen record The Backpack Kid's Lives, post them and write in text overlay what the beat sounded like by using the phrasal template "X Ahh Beat." Several of the Backpack Kid's beats then became TikTok sounds for shitposts and photo slideshows, culminating in remixes of his beats that slowed them down or sped them up, predominantly using the app CapCut.

Origin

In late 2022, The Backpack Kid began posting TikToks^[1][2] that showcased his beat-making abilities using computer software and an electric piano. He began hosting his beat-making sessions on TikTok Live, inherently leading to many viewers due to his large following on the app. During his beat-making livestreams in late 2022, commentators in the chat would often roast him by calling his beat a "goofy ahh beat" or using the phrasal template "X ahh beat."

On November 3rd, 2022, TikToker^[3] 1stofmonth posted a screen recording of a Backpack Kid beat-making session with text overlay reading, "Comments are frying dude 💀." The TikTok received roughly 21,600 plays and over 500 likes in three months and is currently the first-known screen recording of a Backpack Kid beat-making session (shown below).

Continuing into November 2022, more screen recordings were posted to TikTok, gaining more engagement as time went on. For instance, on November 12th, 2022, TikToker^[4] summigodd posted a video emphasizing that they could not stop laughing at The Backpack Kid's Live, gaining roughly 87,700 plays and 2,100 likes in three months (shown below, left). On November 18th, TikToker^[5] iwillseethis posted a screen recording with text overlay reading, "Goofy ahh beat," earning roughly 1.3 million plays and 90,500 likes in three months (shown below, right).

In December 2022 and January 2023, more iterations and examples were posted to TikTok, like one video posted on December 19th, 2022, by TikToker^[6] xenozer0 who posted a screen recording of a The Backpack Kid beat in which he was moving his hand across all of the keys on the keyboard. Over the course of two months, the video received roughly 4.7 million plays and 467,600 likes (shown below, left). This specific The Backpack Kid beat received mass usage as a TikTok sound,^[7] gaining roughly 4,600 videos in two months. On January 28th, 2023, TikToker^[8] grstorm_3 made a remix of the beat, earning roughly 398,500 plays and 53,200 likes in five days (shown below, right).

TikTokers also started using the sound^[9] created by TikToker^[8] grstorm_3 for shitpost video compilations and other memes. For instance, on February 1st, 2023, TikToker^[10] creemierr posted a video using the sound, earning roughly 66,500 plays and 14,600 likes in one day (shown below).
