The trend started in mid-May 2025, inspiring ironic variations in which users added pictures of their pets, anime characters or celebrities and their expected perfume to the template.
Origin
On May 23rd, 2025, X[1] user @giulia_m2sa uploaded a picture of herself accompanied by a screenshot of the Fragnatica[2] website, a site dedicated to fragrance enthusiasts that shows characteristics and traits of perfumes and colognes, showing the perfume MMMM… by Juliette Has a Gun next to a photo of herself. The tweet (seen below) is captioned, "the face / the perfume," and amassed roughly 711,000 views and 800 likes in a week.

Spread
X / Twitter user @giulia_m2sa's tweet stated a chain of reposts in the next few days, inspiring other X users to share pictures of themselves and their favorite perfumes using the same format.
For instance, on May 23rd, 2025, X[3] @charl0kitty posted a selfie and an image of Thierry Mugler's Angel Nova Eau De Parfum, using the same caption in the original tweet, "the face / the perfume." The post (seen below) received roughly 38,000 views and 130 likes in a week.

On May 24th, 2025, X[4] user posted an ironic version of the trend, adding a distorted selfie of a teen and a fictional perfume called League of Legends in reference to the video game. The post (seen below) sparked more than 8,000 views and 210 likes in a week.
