About
The Internet vs. 4chan, also known as The Internet vs. /b/, is an image macro series that compares human interactions in real life to the complex relations between the 4chan community and the Internet at large, with members of the former being typically depicted as sadistic, perverted or otherwise mentally ill.
Origin
The earliest known image macro was posted on the picture hosting site Chan4Chan[7] on January 20th, 2009, which featured a photograph taken during filming of the 2009 comedy film The Rebound in which a man representing the /b/ (random) board exposes himself to a family representing the Internet (shown below).
Spread
On April 24th, 2009, an image macro featuring a Hentai screen capture of a naked woman in bed with a crying young boy (shown below) was posted to the website My[confined]Space[1] (shown below).
On October 1st, an exploitable template image was posted on the /b/ board on 4chan, which featured a side for photos representing the Internet and a side for images representing the /b/ board (shown below, left). The thread received many replies with custom versions of the image (shown below).
On June 7th, 2010, FunnyJunk[5] user joshic submitted a compilation of Internet vs. 4chan image macros, which gained over 8,200 views and 200 up votes in the first three years. On October 30th, 2011, DeviantArtist Mezkalito4p uploaded a My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic animated GIF in which Pinkie Pie drinking chocolate rain is depicted as 4chan (shown below).
On August 7th, 2012, YouTuber Filip Hjelm uploaded a video titled "Internet vs. 4chan," which compared the treatment of newcomers on 4chan with Reddit, 9gag and FunnyJunk (shown below).
On September 14th, Redditor TheShrubberyDemander submitted an image macro featuring a naked man laying upside down next to a flower arrangement to the /r/4chan[8] subreddit (shown below, left). Prior to being archived, the post garnered upwards of 930 up votes and 10 comments. On May 23rd, 2013, FunnyJunk[6] user arneanka submitted an animated GIF titled "4chan vs. Rest of the Internet" showing a baboon placing its rear end against the glass at a zoo (shown below, right).
