About

The Netherlands Second is a comedic sketch produced by the Dutch TV show Zondag Met Lubach (translation: Sunday with Lubach) satirizing Donald Trump. Upon its airing in January 2017, the skit quickly went viral nationally and overseas, inspiring various parodies featuring other European nations in place of the Netherlands.

Origin

On January 23rd, 2017, the official Youtube channel of Zondag met Lubach posted the video titled "The Netherlands welcomes Trump in his own words", which featured a Donald Trump vocal impersonation giving a tour of The Netherlands; satirizing Trump's speech mannerisms and political views while introducing various notable- and less notable items from the country, ending the video with a request to Trump to add "The Netherlands Second" to his "America First" slogan.

Spread

The video quickly went viral, garnering over 15 million views in its first week and inspiring several spinoff videos from various countries. German comedian Jan Böhmermann also created a version for his similar show as Zondag met Lubach, Neo Magazin Royale,[5] alongside an online platform to allow other countries to upload their versions: Every Second Counts.[14]

WHO... WANTS TO BE SECOND?

Fine Brothers Entertainment soon made a Teens React installment on the video,[1] and What's Trending also uploaded a video on the video and the videos that it inspired. On February 7th, 2017, Vanity Fair[13] held an interview with Greg Shapiro, who recorded the Trump impression for "The Netherlands Second," and Sean Streeter, who did the impression for other country's versions. The popularity of the video also didn't go unnoticed to the Netherlands itself, with for example Ponypark Slagharen noticing an increase in site traffic[15] and Dutch singer Lee Towers having an increase in reservations for shows.[16]
