About

The Twilight Sparkle Scepter, also known as the Twilicane, is a pure gold scepter topped with the head of the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic character Twilight Sparkle wearing a sheepish grin.

Origin

In Season 4 Episode 2 of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, originally aired on November 23rd, 2013, the villain character Discord gives Twilight Sparkle a scepter and a royal cape while mocking her for being a princess after leaving her friends in the Everfree Forest (shown below).

Spread

After the episode aired on November 23rd, 2013, threads about it began to appear on 4chan's /mlp/ (pony) board, with the scepter first being pointed out a few hours later in a screencapture thread.[8] The first seperate thread about the scepter was launched a few hours after that,[9] quickly resulting in image macros and photoshops of the scepter.

hub KILL THEM TWILIGHT KILLTHEM ALL

On November 24th, the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic storyboard artist Sabrina Alberghetti posted a tweet linking to a face swapped image of Twilight Sparkle and the scepter. That same day, Alberghetti also commented on a vector of the scepter uploaded to DeviantART, saying that it was she who animated that scene.[11]

The same day, YouTuber Daimondo uploaded a video featuring a 3D-rendered model of the scepter in the sandbox game Garry's Mod (shown below, left). Also on November 24th, the My Little Pony blog Equestria Daily[1] published an article about the overnight popularity surrounding the scepter, providing links to Garry’s Mod and Team Fortress 2 3D models[2] of the scepter and a newly-created “Ask Twilight Scepter” Tumblr blog.[3] On November 25th, YouTuber MrMental4 uploaded a parody of the Leekspin animation featuring Twilight Sparkle and the scepter (shown below, right).

On the same day, MLP Forums[4] member Bunny submitted a thread about the scepter, noting its prevalence on the My Little Pony-related image hosting site Derpibooru.[5] Also on November 25th, Redditor Scottfra submitted an animated GIF of a dead horse being beaten with the scepter (shown below) to the /r/mylittlepony[6] subreddit, which was initially uploaded to Know Your Meme by user Tyler Bowman[7] a day earlier, gaining over 520 up votes and 35 comments in the first 16 hours.

I'm not sure if this is the dumbest or most brilliant meme entry.

I think my brain just imploded from the sheer stupidity of this "entry." A term I use very loosely

      mfw its your own entry

This is going to get Deadpooled. Downvote me if you want, but almost every Pony-related in-joke I've seen on this site gets the axe (with the exceptions of the ones that are Confirmed, though bear in mind that the last one to be approved happened months ago).

And this especially applies to a running joke that literally started minutes after the source aired – that'd be jumping the gun. Take a quick look at this to see what I mean.

I recommend a different name for this like The Twilight Sparkle Cane or Cane of Twilight Sparkle.

The entry was made by a troll, means, instant deadpool.

But also, there is many pictures of the cane all over. I suggest we wait, if nothing happens; nuke it.

This was probably a nice troll entry i have seen. Not the best but still hilarious.
When i first looked at the entry i was like: "hmm a good documention for little thing" it is not really important if it is from MLP or not.
When i read the entry, i lost my shit. That was a good-looking childish entry. 8/10

About the meme itself.. Well it doesn't matter if it comes from MLP. Because screaming like "NO! THERE IS ENOUGH MLP ENTRY" is stupid. We document any kind of meme in here. The only issue is: is that entry worthy? Does entry cover enough?

I don't think so. If no one gonna contribute(for real), yeah deadpool.

    • Kung Fu Cthulhu - 10 years ago

For the record, I wasn't saying that this was going to be Deadpooled because it was from this show, but because (as far as I know) most in-jokes are added as sub-sections to the main artcle instead of new pages altogether (presuming they're even that prominent to begin with). I think that I heard that a fairly popular page on here (involving the blue horse squashing her cheeks up close) was Confirmed, but it would have been Deadpooled by the site's current policies had it not already been Confirmed.

I love it how every season premiere of MLP brings a new sub-meme. last time it was GAK, now we have The Cane. Can't wait for the next thing.

Though this one will die soon enough anyway, enjoy it while it's still funny.

    1. Haha. Funny write up but no. Everything in this article is going to get rewritten

    2. Origin please! What scene in MLP does the cane appear in and where (/mlp/ no doubt) did people start talking about it?

    3. Obviously it got some attention and people are making macro's for it, but why?

    4. Wait on this one. Needs more spread or else it gets deadpooled

Stick to comments if you like. But if you want shit done around here, you have to take it to the forum.

Article comments are a distant voice to the people who actually make changes in this place and indeed, this article didn't get attention until I posted about it on the forum

Things are handled this way because the comment section is inferior for serious discussion. Here you have limited sentences, no edit button, no topic focus, no formatting tools, small page space. It's just harder to manage

IMO, this scepter should be used in a similar way as it was in the episode: something to ironically give to someone who’s acting superior to others, or maybe just like the Neil deGrasse Tyson Reaction… At least, I think I’ll be using it that way. I don’t think it will last as a random joke.

You heard her cry of pleasure!) and the effin CANE goes viral like AIDS in Zebrica? o_O SERIOUSLY! This meme has spread wider than Cloudkicker's legs!

Except that by such a definition, ALL memes are forced. There isn't a meme in existence in which every person with internet access knows, so by definition all memes are made by "groups".

What is needed for a meme is:

          1) contribution – the meme must have multiple related works created independently by different creators (a possible exception being creepypasta).

          2) spread – the meme must be in use by multiple sites outside the origin.

          3) significance – the meme must be in wide enough and long enough use that references to the meme will be recognized years after the initial occurrence.

1 and 2 are certainly true; there has been quite a few derivatives and the use of them has spread far beyond the origin at 4chan. 3 remains to be seen and is unlikely. Twicane is more likely to end up like gak and be virtually forgotten within a month or less.

This entry should be +wait to see if it fizzles or not.

So, to make a comment about the article itself:
Its says that the origin is from 4chan. While I wouldn't be surprised, is there any evidence of this, such as a screen cap showing this to be the case? Similarly, the first thing noted about spread in the article is a tweet from Sabrina Alberghetti. While in the context of this I think that is relatively notable, but it happened after spread was well underway. Something slightly older might be better suited for the beginning of the spread section.

Okay, having reviewed this, why isn't this article giving more credit to /mlp/ for the origin?

It was those guys who did most of the work in these threads:

From those threads came a massive slew of image macro's that spread to KYM and Derpibooru.

If you go look at the first sceptre image uploaded to Derpibooru; it credits KYM as the source and KYM got all of it's content from /mlp/. Derpibooru is not the origin

    This is forced.
It was deadpooled and the moderators had the nerve to revive this. It is a troll post, and not only that, it is also a forced meme.
    What are you guys thinking?

The images are a mash up of other forced memes making it into a large clusterfuck. Exactly why is this thing being forced, and also shown in the trending gallery makes me sick. It was supposed to be deadpooled, not rewritten and made into something to "look professional" on how forced it is.

Is it an event, a meme, or a fad? What is it? No one knows, and no one wants to know because of how atrocious this revival made to be.

Forced meme is still a meme.
Also yeah, entry creator did a troll post started of a real meme. But it has spreaded all around brony community before this entry has been created. So it has a real popularity.

      Your logic is wrong.

That's what I hate about it. It's not just it's a bad meme, it's the comments that say "You are all butthurt" and all the other hate being bombarded to this, I guess, "meme".

It is a very strange event because it isn't used directly inside the fandom, being that it is merged with many, MANY images. Which is really strange, all the while uninteresting because I can't "get" it, this "meme".

Okay, why are you so bent on protecting this fad? Yeah, I think it's forced, but you're the one going around throwing out insults to people who have a differing opinion on it.

If I don't like something I have to keep it to myself? How is that fair?

Same thing goes to you. Do i have to keep my opinion on your opinion?
Say whatever you want, that doesn't bother me.
Oh also i don't really care nor protective. Just because your argument is invalid.
I am not throwing out insults but you do. Did i ever said something like: "OMG! I love dis! +1 CONFIRM!!1"? I don't decide to deadpool or confirm memes with personal opinions. I am looking for facts, spread, sources, examples, known and popularity.

I am not against different opinions, different opinions aren't always useless. But your opinion is(at least for the entry). Like other positive or negative opinions.

Not gonna say this is the best maymay ever. But this is a maymay if i look through the facts rather than opinions . No need to be so upset about something you hate on the internet. There are way way worse things you would hate even more in real life. Because you won't always be able to ignore most of the things in real life. While it is pretty easy to do on the internet, try to do it.

              tl;dr

Yeah it is a shitty meme. Who cares? It is still a meme.

I never understood the concept of a "forced meme", unless it was only being propagated by a single individual. Really, aren't all memes forced in one aspect or another? I mean, it's not like stuff like the Bed Intruder song just sprung out of the ether, people sat down and decided to remix a guy saying funny things and then decided to post it on the internet, with the intention of people seeing it.

          Isn't that just a "forced"?

      1. Our deadpool jurisdiction is NEVER is absolute. We aren't the final judges that get to decide becomes a meme and what doesn't. If a subject transcends original expectation, we will rescind deadpools. Just because this was in the deadpool once, doesn't mean it stays there

      2. It doesn't matter that the OP was trolling. That doesn't mean the subject can't be a meme. No matter how badly it was originally documented; if the subject actually does start trending then we will recycle entries as we see fit. It's better than leaving duplicate entries of memes in the deadpool

      3. Memes merge, mutate and integrate all the time. The fact that the images are a mash up of other memes supports that this is a trending subject. Not the opposite.

      4. We're not going to ignore THE ASSTONS OF CONTENT coming out of this just because "Waaaah forced maymay waaaah". If it's trends, it trends

      5. It's an exploitable image fad.

#1: Pretty much. I remember the Video Game logic article getting deadpooled, then getting revived and then being put on the front page, so it’s not entirely out of the realm for a deadpooled article to come back from being deadpooled.

I mean, it's not like stuff like the Bed Intruder song just sprung out of the ether, people sat down and decided to remix a guy saying funny things and then decided to post it on the internet, with the intention of people seeing it.

      Isn't that just a "forced"?

Derpibooru is completely flooded with this meme. That in itself is not surprising, since we have a lot of memes, but what is surprising is that almost all of them are positively scored. Twilight Scepter really appeals to a lot of people for one reason or another.

I have a feeling this is going to be around a while, though it will gradually slow. The reason is its simplicity, not that hard a mystery to grasp if one stops being "ponies must be deadpool'd and banned" in their mindset and look at things objectively.

This is a simple image to manipulate, anything with a vertical object can be edited to have it. It's also simple in the joke, it's a cane with a funny face on it, no real mystery behind it. In context of it being used as a mocking gag against twilight by discord, it is still a cane/scepter with a funny face on it.

What I don't understand is the designation of this as a forced meme by some people. That would imply a small minority of people cranking out tons of images for the larger majority to endure. If the brony community everywhere were rejecting this along with everyone else, then I could see a case being made. As it stands it seems everyone is more or less amused, bemused, or generally neutral on the matter, no one seems to feel active hatred for this on any large scale, unlike advice animals who tend to get panned across the board.

I stated earlier in this thread that this was a sub-meme, which I would define as a meme spread within a community, essentially finding its fanbase and users in that community. Like a oh so specific image of a goat that everyone on this site seems to use, despite anyone not on this site probably not understand that at all.

Here we go again with people confusing the MLP fandom for a social justice movement.

How in the world is a fandom making tons of memes indicative of being mentally ill? No, really, please explain. Why do you take offense at that? It's true, just look at the number of sub-entries for MLP on here. It's not something people should be ashamed of.

You do realize that bronies have created memes other than this, right? And they continue to work on existing things, right?

It's so funny, someone can say that all gay people use their sexuality to get special treatment and get +8 votes. I say that bronies make lots of memes and people give me passive-aggressive pleas to stop stereotyping.

I'm just a bit cranky because I don't support garbage like this but it's almost everywhere I go online anyway & I see people getting pissed off at bronies because there's so much of it. I just want the general public to know that we aren't all mentally-ill deviants, but when I object to it, I get downvoted or called names. Because I have the gall to think that public perception matters.

But fine; believe what you want.

How in the world is a fandom making tons of memes indicative of being mentally ill? No, really, please explain. Why do you take offense at that? It's true, just look at the number of sub-entries for MLP on here. It's not something people should be ashamed of.

This is twice as funny because we're supposed to be obsessing over the Tree of Harmony and The Mystery Box.
But no… we took a cheap joke Discord made and blew it out of proportion faster than OJ Simpson's white bronco… We will get bored of it, but in the mean time, it's hilarious.

See, when you compare brony memes to a viral outbreak, I get you mean they spread quickly but you can't tell me it didn't occur to you that some might take it a different way.

But fine; believe what you want.

See, when you compare brony memes to a viral outbreak, I get you mean they spread quickly but you can't tell me it didn't occur to you that some might take it a different way.

But fine; believe what you want.

In true KYM fashion, I command you to go back to Tumblr and whine there, social justice scum.
