About
Then Why Did You Ask For It? is a line associated to a Spongebob Squarepants scene, in which a father gets fed up with his son's caprices. This scene has been used as a 2-panels template, used to expose inconsistent or hypocritical requests and opinions.
Origin
In episode 16b of the 4th season of the series, Hocus Pocus, first aired on January 9th, 2007, a tearful Monroe complains to his father, who just bought him an ice cream cone: "But I don't like pistachio!"; to which his father angrily cringes and replies: "Then why did you ask for it?".
The earliest online reference to that scene is from September 4th, 2013[1]. It later led to a series of memes using two panels, not systematically the exact same two, as a template; the first panel showing Monroe's whining, and the second showing his father angrily responding. The earliest of such templates[2] (below, on the left) dates from April 7th, 2015.
