On August 12th, 2021, Portuguese TikToker^[1] @juliusscesar posted a video playing an Ancient Egyptian-sounding song on an Ancient Egyptian flute called a Ney, gaining over 2.3 million views in a month (shown below).

On August 13th, Portuguese TikToker^[2] @nathaliabbq posted a video with an on-screen caption that roughly translates to, "they say cats were treated like gods in Ancient Egypt so I put on the sound of their supposed flute." In the video, her cat suddenly pays complete attention to the song as it plays, as if entranced by it, gaining over 937,000 views in a month (shown below).

Spread

Over the course of August, Portuguese TikTokers uploaded videos playing the song for their cats, showing them reacting to it in various ways and spreading a rumor that the sound reminds cats about their status as gods in Ancient Egypt. For example, on August 17th, TikToker^[3] @beatrizriutooo posted a video of her cat showing interest in the sound, gaining over 15 million views in a month (shown below, left). On August 18th, TikToker^[4] @gatosivirino posted a similar video, gaining over 10.5 million views in a similar span of time (shown below, right).

In September, the trend spread to North American TikTokers. For example, on September 10th, TikToker^[5] @crazycris94 posted a video of her cat reacting to the sound, her eyes appearing to go gold because of a reflection, gaining over 22 million views in three days (shown below).

On September 11th, TikToker^[6] @iamdirtyydan posted a similar video, gaining over 10.2 million views in two days (shown below, left). On September 23rd, TikToker^[7] @boleshuli posted a video using the sound with the caption "bro I think my cat is still an ancient god" gaining over 7.2 million views in a day (shown below, right).
