About
Tiddygate2021 refers to a viral debate in the Dungeons & Dragons community about whether or not Lizardfolk,[1] a species of bipedal human-like lizards, should have breasts or not. The debate largely took place on the /r/DnD and /r/DnDmemes subreddits throughout early 2021, where it was deemed "Tiddygate2021" on the latter and given its own post flair.
Origin
On July 10th, 2020, Redditor /u/adultwhitedragon made a post to /r/DnD[2] simply titled, "Do Lizardfolk have titties." The post gained over 50 comments in seven months, with most agreeing that Lizardfolk do not have breasts or that it's up to the player's discretion (example comments shown below).
On February 2nd, webcomic creator and Instagram[3] user @couldbeworsecomic posted a comic referencing Lizardfolk breasts, implying they don't have any, garnering over 1,600 likes in a month (shown below, left). On February 3rd, 2021, /u/Nattani uploaded the comic to /r/Dndmemes,[4] garnering over 45,800 upvotes in a comparable span of time, igniting lite arguments about the topic in the comments section.
On February 12th, @couldbeworsecomic posted a follow-up to the comic on Instagram[5] doubling-down on the idea that female Lizardfolk don't have breasts, referencing the debate in the caption, writing, "People get really defensive about comics on mammary-less reptile girls, so I made another one, you are welcome" (shown below, right). The comic gained 1,500 likes in two weeks. It was reposted to /r/DnD[9] by /u/CouldBeWorse_comic the next day, garnering over 4,400 upvotes in the same span of time.
On February 25th, Redditor /u/15Orphans posted a photoshopped comic strip under the title "Deal with it pleb" (shown below) to /r/DnDmemes[6] asserting that if the artist wants to draw breasts on female Lizardfolk, they will, garnering over 34,800 upvotes and 770 comments in five days (many of them arguing about Lizardfolk breasts).
Following this post, the flair "Tiddygate2021" was started by /r/DnDmemes[7] moderators to organize posts surrounding the debate, also increasing the amount of discourse around it.
Spread
Over the course of the next week leading into March, posts and memes discussing Tiddygate2021 and the function or necessity of breasts on Lizardfolk (sometimes referred to in posts as "snitties," a portmanteau of "snake" and "titties") increased significantly in volume, particularly on /r/DnDmemes, taking over the subreddit. While most of the debate is in good fun, some saw a deeper-rooted problem behind the memes.
On February 26th, Redditor /u/Yeah-But-Ironically posted a Jim Halpert Pointing to Whiteboard meme to /r/DnDmemes[11] suggesting Tiddygate2021 is about more than just breasts on Lizardfolk, but about fighting against the over-sexualization of female characters in DnD and fantasy fan art in general (shown below). This is a frequent topic of debate on both forums that predates Tiddygate2021, as some users find that too much oversexualized fan art ends up succeeding on the forum. The post gained over 48,700 upvotes and 270 comments in four days and is the top post under the flair as of March 2nd, 2021.
On February 28th, /u/CaptainYesani and /u/RobotfaceX posted Lisa Simpson's Presentation memes discussing various aspects of the debate to /r/DnDmemes,[7][8] garnering over 6,800 and 5,500 upvotes and 200 comments each respectively in two days (shown below, left and right).
On the same day, Redditor /u/xx78900 posted a breakdown of the Tiddygate2021 drama to /r/SubredditDrama,[10] gaining over 670 upvotes in a day. That day, /r/DnDmemes moderator /u/toxik0n made a post[15] to the sub describing what was going on with the meme and assuring users that they were banning people who used it to post misogynistic or hateful content.
Later that day, Redditor /u/Mdepietro posted an alignment chart referencing various standings on Lizardfolk breasts to /r/DnDmemes,[14] garnering over 13,200 upvotes in two days (shown below).
On March 1st, Redditor /u/Chromegost uploaded a crossover meme to /r/DnDmemes[12] featuring Busty Aunt Cass, another breast-themed meme format that went viral at the same time as Tiddygate2021, garnering over 32,000 upvotes in a day (shown below, left). On the same day, Redditor /u/n0753w posted a Family Guy meme referencing how strange the debate is to /r/DnDmemes,[13] garnering over 26,000 upvotes in a comparable span of time (shown below, right).
