Tired D.W. or D.W. With Black Eyes refers to an image of D.W. Read from the animated TV show Arthur grinning with dark circles photoshopped under her eyes as if tired. A photoshopped version of the image where D.W.'s eyes have been separated first became the subject of memes in 2014 before the dark circles were added in 2018, inspiring image macros where D.W. represents someone who is tired or high.

Origin

On April 27th, 2014, Tumblr^[2] user tomhardest posted a photoshopped image of D.W. from Arthur with her eyes lowered and separated next to an image of Arthur being shot in the eye with milk, describing it as the face he makes when he ejaculates (shown below).

The image became popular in memes over the following years, often used in jokes about being high or tired. On June 3rd, 2014, Redditor JamesonBeer posted a meme to Reddit's /r/funny^[1] using the image with a caption implying D.W. is high, gaining over 2,500 upvotes in eight years (shown below, left). On July 28th, 2016, now-deleted Twitter page @arthurtbh posted a version of the meme implying D.W. is tired (shown below, right).

On July 19th, 2018, Twitter^[3] user @tristehomo posted a photoshopped version of the original image without edited eyes where D.W. has black circles under her eyes, writing, "'you always look tired' BECAUSE I AM TIRED BITCH" gaining over 185,000 likes and 99,000 retweets in two years (shown below).^[4] The tweet was included in a Buzzfeed^[5] collection later that month.

Spread

The image spread across social media over the following months, inspiring numerous high-engagement image macros. For example, on August 18th, 2018, Twitter^[6] user @ThomasAbowd posted a version of the meme captioned, "Yeah, I can fit it in my schedule," gaining over 210,000 likes and 100,000 retweets in three years (shown below).

The meme was added to Imgflip^[7] that year, inspiring a number of variants.

On March 31st, 2020, Tumblr^[9] user sxxndwxvx posted a version of the meme, gaining over 64,400 notes in just under two years (shown below, left). On December 10th, 2021, Redditor ParadoxPoco posted a version of the meme to /r/me_irl^[8] about being excited to go to bed after waking up, gaining over 7,700 upvotes in a month (shown below).
