Valid To Eat Fingers is a catchphrase associated with a creepy image of a horse. After a Tumblr uploaded a picture of the strange-looking horse with the caption "valid to eat fingers," the image and phrase became combined into a surreal image macro that itself became parodied on the site.

Origin

On October 18th, 2017, Tumblr user dimetrome[1] responded to a post by user luxtempestas that read "so tired of all this horse negativity on tumblr. horses are valid" with a creepy picture of a horse and the caption "valid to eat fingers." The post gained over 141,000 notes in three and a half years (shown below).

Spread

Shortly after the post began spreading, Tumblr user hundredsofsmallbirds[2] posted an image macro of the horse and the phrase, gaining over 50,000 notes (shown below, left). The image macro inspired several variations featuring different characters in place of the horse with the same text. For example, on February 16th, 2018, DeviantArt[3] user EldritchBliss made a variation featuring Fluttershy from My Little Pony (shown below, right).

The horse image macro also inspired redraws of the meme. For example, DeviantArt[4] user Chigle posted a redraw on September 22nd, 2020 (shown below, left). On August 3rd, 2018, Tumblr[5] user tearlessrainart posted a redraw, gaining 350 notes (shown below, right).
