#VDayPunOff is a hashtag challenge posed to zoos around the world to tweet a picture of an animal and create a Valentine's Day pun to accompany it.
Origin
On February 13th, 2019, The Taronga Zoo's[1] twitter account tweeted a picture of peacocks with the caption"Roos can be red, Peacocks shine blue, @aucklandzoo, @PerthZoo, @MelbourneZoo, @ZoosVictoria, @sandiegozoo, @WWF_Australia, @Featherdale, it’s Valentine’s Day and we challenge you! #VDayPunOff" (shown below). The tweet was retweeted 10 times and likes by 74 accounts within a day.

That day, those challenged respond posted puns accompanied by a picture of the animal. @AucklandZoo[2] tweeted "Have you cottoned on?! It’s #VDayPunOff time so quit monkey-ing around! 🐒❤️" (shown below, left). @PerthZoo[3] tweeted a picture of bilbies with the captioned "Bilby together forever! #VDayPunOff" which was like 68 times that day (shown below, right).
@ZoosVictoria[4] posted a picture of a tiny turtle accompanied by the caption "You’re single? I’m shell shocked." The tweet garnered 7 retweets and 41 likes (shown below, left). @WWF_Australia[5] tweeted a picture of a clown fish making the pun "If you clown around in relationships, expect bad breakups and many anemones #VDayPunOff #AdviceFromNemo" (shown below, right).
The San Diego Zoo's[6] Twitter account (the only non-Australian zoo challenged by the original post) tweeted
"May our love never tapir off. ❤️ #VDayPunOff" with a picture of a tapir gaining 474 retweets and 2,400 likes in a day (shown below).
On February 14th, Zoos around the world continued the challenge. @MarylandZoo[7] posted a picture of hogs, stating "Sending hogs & kisses. ❤️ #VDayPunOff" (shown below, left). The tweet gathered four retweets and 20 likes that day. Bali Zoo tweeted a picture of bids accompanied with the caption "When love is in the air, we hope all of you love birds stick together in a flock forever.🐥💕 #ValentineDay" (shown below, right).
Videos were also tweeted. For example @NationalZoo shared a video of their baby otter with the caption "You 'otter' be our Valentine" (shown below).
