Walking Fish refers to a series of memes and reactions featuring a video of a fish crawling on a mound of snow and appears to be using its fins as if they were legs. Many memes joke about the fish's role in evolution.

Origin

The exact origin of the video is unknown. The earliest available usage of the video was posted by iFunny [1] user CykaGamburger on December 9th, 2019. The post received more than 4,600 reactions and 445 comments in less than three months (shown below). In the following days, edits based on the video were shared by other users on iFunny, including notable posts by users MortalCringe[5] and GhostCrab.[6]



Spread

Several days later, on December 12th, 2019, Redditor [2] fancyglassesgamer shared the video accompanied by the man from the How Old Is meme. They captioned the video, "Atheists be like 'Go Grandpa Go!'" The post received more than 190 points (98% upvoted) in less than three months (screenshot shown below).

A similar edit of the video was later shared by Twitter user @warcriminall on December 18th. The post received more than 179,000 views, 14,000 likes and 3,900 retweets in less than three months (shown below).

On February 10th, 2020, Redditor[3] eternalrefuge86 shared the video on the /r/WTF subreddit, where it received more than 43,000 points (93% upvoted) and 1,200 comments.

That day, Twitter account @Unexplained shared the video with the caption "Time for a second round of evolution." The post received more than 5.9 million views, 40,000 likes and 14,000 retweets in less than two weeks (shown below).

Two days later, on February 12th, Twitter user @chyumiin shared the video with the caption, "Animals are starting to evolve again and yandere simulator is still not even 10% finished." Within one week, the tweet received more than 113,000 likes and 28,000 views (shown below).

On February 14th, Redditor[4] julianbps9 shared the video on the /r/okbuddyretard subreddit, where it received more than 5,900 points (99% upvoted) in less than one week.
