We're Cancelling Each Other Over X Takes refers to a participatory Twitter trend in which users ask others to post their unpopular and controversial opinions. The format quickly developed into a parody trend, with Twitter users making joke posts based on it.

Origin

On April 5th, 2022, Twitter[1] user @trichefaucons tweeted, "we're canceling each other over food takes today. post your cancellable food take," inviting users to reply with unpopular and controversial opinions on food that would get them canceled on Twitter. The tweet (shown below) received over 3,000 retweets, 91.5 quote tweets and 54,600 likes in three days.

In replies to the tweet and quote tweets, users replied[2][3][4] with their opinions on food (examples shown below).

For example, on April 6th, 2022, Twitter[5] user @Pochitadoll started a thread about cancelable anime takes which received over 460 retweets, 13,400 quote tweets and 11,100 likes in two days (shown below, left). Later on the same day, Twitter[6] user @ProgPro started a thread about controversial music opinions which gained over 200 retweets, 11,000 quote tweets and 4,900 likes in two days (shown below, right).

Later on April 6th, the first tweets parodying and subverting the trend were posted. For example, on that day, Twitter[7] user @riteofspirit posted a tweet based on the format in which he lured others to share their credit card information (shown below, left). The tweet gained over 9,000 retweets and 46,900 likes in two days. On April 7th, Twitter[8] user @Beamposter posted a tweet in which he urged others to share the "most cancellable picture of their boobs." The tweet gained over 3,300 retweets, 1,000 quote tweets and 29,100 likes in two days (shown below, right).
