About
Western Artists Be Like "I Fixed It" refers to a series of memes which parody redraws of character Uzaki-Chan of Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out and a certain type of redraws in general. The memes usually depict various popular characters imagined chubbier, and are similar to Original vs. Un-Tumlrized.
Origin
In mid-August 2020, during a Twitter controversy surrounding the design of Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out main character Uzaki-chan, several Twitter users posted their artistic reimaginations of the character, with notable versions posted by Twitter users @catlateral[1] on August 10th (9,000 likes) @willcove[2] on the same day (5,400 likes) and @allukahhh[3] on August 12th (16,600 likes).
On August 12th, Twitter[4] user @D_Kumii posted a tweet which parodied the redraws, writing "western artists be like 'I fixed it'" and posting images of One Piece character Nami and minor character Chocolat who attempted to pose as Nami. The post received over 5,500 retweets and 26,900 likes in one month (shown below).
Spread
Following the viral spread of the tweet, it got adopted as a meme format, with users posting two images of a character (or similarly-looking characters), with one image depicting them chubbier than the other. For example, on August 13th, Twitter[5] user @BragonOfBojima made a post based on images of Yakuza character Kazuma Kiryu, gaining over 250 retweets and 940 likes in one month (shown below, left). A JoJo's Bizarre Adventure joke posted by Twitter[6] user @ThisIsJobin on August 14th received 40 retweets and over 330 likes in one month (shown below, right). In some examples, the second image also depicted characters having a darker skin tone.
The parody format received a surge in popularity after on August 23rd, Twitter[7] user @Phanraiser posted a meme based on two images of Danganronpa character Byakuya Togami, with the format gaining further spread on Twitter and other online platforms.
