About

What Do You Think He's Listening To refers to a Girls vs. Boys exploitable meme format in which two women at the gym wonder what Yes Chad is listening to while lifting heavy weights, assuming its hard rock. The last panel subverts expectations by revealing that Yes Chad is listening to a different genre. The meme was popularized in mid-2021 across a wide range of platforms.

Origin

On March 12th, 2021, artist JakeArmorSmith posted a two-panel redrawn Girls vs. Boys meme in which Trad Girl and Doomer Girl wonder what "Yes Chad" is listening to while lifting barbells, assuming that it's death metal or hard rock. The second panel reveals that Yes Chad is listening to monkey screams. The meme (shown below) received over 4,000 views and 62 favorites on DeviantArt[1] and 19 retweets and over 100 likes on Twitter[2] in one month.

Despite being an inverted reskin of "That Girl Is So Cute, I Wonder What She's Listening To…" this is probably the first iteration of this meme I don't hate. It's blurry but at least it uses different artwork and not the same wojaks as the other 50 iterations of this meme use. Second of all, it doesn't berate one point of view or action of one person while idolizing that of another. It just takes a stereotype and shows how one can break it, and that's the joke. Its not all that creative or original but there is a joke here.

Memes that attack one viewpoint or action can be funny if built with a sense of irony (see the original Virgin vs. Chad meme, where the virgin's typically normal actions are portrayed as overly negative, contrasted with the Chad's outlandish and over the top actions that would be considered outrageous for an actual person to do, hence the joke.) but far too often I see people load their actual thoughts into these memes without a punchline. If there is no punchline, make a text post. You don't need a macro to share an opinion.
