About
Works On Contigency? No, Money Down! is a text associated to Esq. Lionel Hutz's business card in an episode of The Simpsons; the punctuation was hastily added by Hutz with a red pen in order to turn the original statement on its head. This scene was the inspiration for many memes, in which the text on the business card is replaced by another text which is similarly modified to invert its meaning.
Origin
On March 17th, 1996, the 18th episode of season 7 of The Simpsons, The Day The Violence Died, premiered on Fox. In one scene, Bart Simpson reaches Lionel Hutz to ask him to become Chester J. Lampwick's attorney in a copyright lawsuit. This scene became popular thanks to the following exchange between Bart and Hutz:
- Alright, gentlemen, I'll take your case. But I'm going to have to ask for a thousand-dollar retainer.
- A thousand dollars? But your ad says, "No money down!"
- D'oh, they got this all screwed up. [adds punctuation to his business card]
- So you don't work on a contingency basis?
- "No, money down!" Oops. I shouldn't have this Bar Association logo here either. [rips the bottom half of his card and eats it]
This scene was first uploaded on YouTube on December 4th, 2012[1].
Spread
This scene was turned into an exploitable at many occasions. A meme featuring Ganondorf from The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess, posted on Twitter on November 22nd, 2020 by Zelda Gif World[2] was liked over 25,000 times and retweeted over 3,000 times in 4 years.
On May 6th, 2022, the Facebook page Simpsons Bortposting® uploaded a meme[3] based on 4th wall-breaking, which gained over 5,400 reactions in 2 years and a half.
