X In DDLC refers to a series of memes in which various characters appear in the club room location from the 2018 Doki Doki Literature Club, as if about to begin dialogue with the player.

Origin

On November 4th, 2020, YouTube[1] user Nikocaine posted a one second long Doki Doki Literature Club meme in which Rick Sanchez from the Rick and Morty animated series suddenly appears to start dialogue with the player, with the video cutting off as Rick begins to say "Morty" . The video (authorship unconfirmed) received over 71,000 views on YouTube in one year (shown below).

Spread

Through 2021, the edit saw viral spread online. For example, on April 8th, 2021, YouTuber[2] Desbug posted a recording oh his stream in which he reacted to the video, with the upload gaining over 367,000 views in one year.

On September 21st, 2021, YouTube[3] userGODSTROM troll4k posted the earliest found derivative meme based on the format featuring Demoman from Team Fortress 2. The edit gained 710 views in four months (shown below).

On December 7th, 2021, Twitter[4] user @TF2_Network posted another Team Fortress 2 meme based on the format, now featuring Heavy.

In late December 2021 and early January 2022, a version featuring soccer player Ronaldo was circulated online, with several posts of the edit on Twitter[5][6] and iFunny[7] going viral.
