"Yes, I Am Pretty Despicable" is a memorable quote uttered by the character Gru in the film Minions 2: The Rise of Gru. Online, screenshots from the scene are used in reaction image macros about pranks and deviousness.
Origin
On February 5th, 2020, Universal Pictures UK published the trailer for Minions 2: The Rise of Gru on YouTube. In the trailer, a character asks Gru (voiced by Steve Carrell) if he can be a supervillain. He responds, "Yes, I am pretty despicable." The post received more than 3.9 million views in less than one month (shown below).[1]
Two days later, on February 7th, 2020 Redditor Pionix155 posted one of the earliest known usages of the meme. The post received more than 38,000 points (95% upvoted) and 250 comments in less than three weeks (shown below).
Spread
Over the next few weeks, the meme continued to appear on various subreddits. For example, on February 8th, Redditor[3] PEARP1MPLES posted a variation with the caption "Me when I tell the wrong answer in kahoot and 18 people fall for it." The post received more than 53,000 points (95% upvoted) and 120 comments in less than three weeks (shown below, left).
That day, Redditor[4] -Send-Me-Your-Tits- shared a variation with the caption "When the person in the ad says to not skip the ad but I skip it anyways." The post received more than 9,000 (98% upvoted) in less than three weeks (shown below, center).
On February 24th, Redditor[5] xavi_chiang shared a variation about a fake spider prank. The post received more than 24,000 points (96% upvoted) and 110 comments in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).
