Gru Reading While Vector Explains is an object-labeling image macro of the characters Gru and Vector from the 2010 animation Despicable Me. In the image, Gru is reading a map while Vector explains something to him. The meme became popular in February 2020 on Reddit and was often labeled with Vector saying something distracting or disturbing.
Origin
On July 9th, 2010, Despicable Me was released. On July 23rd, 2013, YouTuber D Schnell uploaded the scene "Vector's description of a vector" (shown below). The video garnered over 345,200 views in seven years.
On February 20th, 2020, Redditor PowerfulOperation8 uploaded the image to r/dankmemes[1] with Gru labeled "Me trying to study" and Vector labeled "25 awesome facts about doorstops" (shown below). The post received over 10,800 points (99% upvoted) in a day.
Spread
On February 20th, 2020, Redditors on r/dankmemes[2] continued to post the image. Redditor Jadiririor posted a variation that accumulated over 9,000 points (97% upvoted) in a day (shown below, left). The next day, Redditor Pinkdogepoo posted a variation to r/dankmemes[3] adding a close-up panel of Gru's face (shown below, right). The post received over 18,600 points (97% upvoted) in a day.
