Gru Hella Gay is an image macro series featuring the protagonist Gru from the Despicable Me franchise, which often contains captions indicating that the other internet users are "gay" based on the relative position of their comments, chat messages and forum posts.
Origin
The meme is rumored to have originated in a Discord chat where a user Timelord Sheep posted the phrase "Gru is Gay", leading user ABlankNam3dKid to respond with a photoshopped image of Gru captioned with the message "The person above is hella gay." On August 3rd, 2017, a screenshot of the Discord exchange was uploaded by DeviantArtist Braedenrox (shown below).[1]
Spread
On December 28th, 2017, Redditor benge13 submitted an image macro with the heading "This is 'Ultra Gru'," indicating that both the posters above and below the image are gay (shown below).[2]
On January 30th, 2018, DeviantArtist[4] TheDukeOfLuke submitted a deep fried meme titled "gru vs the hella gay army," featuring Gru alongside series "Ugandan Knuckles": avatars (shown below). On March 6th, an article for "Ultra Hella Gay Gru Generation XI" was uploaded to the Joke-Battles Wikia.
