About

Garoto Mimimi (or Mimimi Kid in English) refers to an image macro of the face of American actor Miko Hughes in a scene from the TV show Full House. The image was popularized on Facebook by Brazilians in November 2016 with the phrase "garoto mimimi," an expression in Portuguese given to spoiled kids. The meme is also featured in Spanish-speaking meme pages, known as Yi Ni Timis, which is a child-like way of writing "ya no tomes" in Spanish (English: "don't drink anymore").

Origin

On November 7th, 2016, the Facebook[1] page "Por Que Você Não Amadurece" (English: "Why Don't You Grow Up") posted an image macro taken from the '90s tv show Full House, more precisely from episode 18 in the sixth season. The kid in the picture doing a facial expression of displeasure is the character Aaron Bailey, played by American actor Miko Hughes. The meme posted by the Brazilian page has the overlay text in Portuguese "Why don't you grow up" at the top of the image and a phrase below that changes all the vowels of the words to the letter "i," encompassing the stereotype of how a spoiled child speaks in Portuguese. The post (seen below) garnered 4,100 likes and 4,100 shares in seven years.

The image macro quickly gained virality with Brazilian Facebook users, with the actor's disgusted face becoming a popular reaction image. For instance, Facebook[3] user @barbaderespeito posted the meme on November 8th, 2016, with the overlay text in Portuguese "Take your beard off, it's ugly," and the same phrase below written in a child-like manner. The post (seen below, left) garnered 8,100 likes and 14,000 shares in seven years. Another example, posted by @porquevocenaoamadurece[4] on the same day, uses the image (seen below, right) with the overlay text "I warned you" in Portuguese, receiving 5,200 likes and 1,700 shares in seven years.

- EU TE AVISEI FB.COM/PORQUEVOCENAOAMADURECE -I TIAVISI

The actor Miko Hughes publicly thanked the Facebook page "Por Que Você Não Amadurece" on his Instagram[5] for the meme's interest: “More than 300,000 likes in one day? holy cow! Much love to Brazil for making me a meme! And I mean that with ZERO sarcasm," Miko commented on November 8th, 2016. His post (seen below) received 18,712 likes and 2,600 comments in seven years.
