About

You And I Are Not So Different refers to a scene from the 2002 film Spider-Man where Spider-Man and Green Goblin on the roof talking to each other and saying that they are the same. The scene gained popularity in the 2020s as reaction and object labeling edits when the two sides claim they are different, but then in one case found out they are not.

Origin

On May 3rd, 2002, the Spider-Man film directed by Sam Raimi premiered in the US[1]. In the film, there is a scene where Green Goblin kidnaps Spider-Man and takes him to the roof. After he becomes conscious, Green Goblin talks to Spider-Man, claiming that they are the same because they are "amazing creatures." Later, he denies it and replies, "I'm not like you; you're a murderer" (scene shown below).

The earliest usage of the scene in a meme context was posted by an unknown Imgflip user on December 22nd, 2022.[2] (seen below)

Spread

In the 2020s, the scene gained popularity as a reaction image used by netizens on Reddit and X, former Twitter, to express a situation where the two sides that look different turn out to be the same instead. For example on December 12th, 2020, Reddit[3] user TonyGr7 uploaded a screenshot of a news headline about Koala to the /r/memes. The post received more than 32,000 upvotes in four years (shown below).
