About

Yunc is a slang term combining the AAVE slang terms YN, meaning "young nigga," and unc, derived from "uncle" and typically referring to an older, male Black man, but also used to describe younger people with "unc status" or vibes, meaning someone who acts like an unc regardless of age. The term, which essentially means "young unc," was popularized on TikTok in mid-November 2024, inspiring memes about yuncs.

Origin

Unc

Unc is an AAVE slang term typically used to refer to older male members of a Black family or community. The word is sometimes used similarly to "OG" or "oldhead." In the early 2020s, memes about people achieving Unc Status began to spread online. Such jokes often hinged on people realizing that they have reached an age or developed habits associated with reaching "Unc Status."

YNs

YNs or YN, commonly written yns or Them YNs, is an AAVE slang term and acronym that's an abbreviation for "young niggas" or "young nigga." YNs was commonly used on TikTok in 2024 as it was used in memes and video skits from Black creators to joke about younger generations of Black men like Zoomers and Gen Alpha. Many of the men venting about YNs joked about how the younger generations were different, meaner and crazier, similar to the term "crashout." A YN often contrasts an "unc" in these memes and viral videos. The meaning of YNs trended on Urban Dictionary and other social media sites like Twitter / X in mid-2024 amid its TikTok virality. Its usage also sparked discourse about the appropriation of YNs by white and other non-Black internet users.
