Microsoft Unveils Cheaper Xbox Series S After Leaks And Announces Prices and Release Date For Series X
Late on Monday night, Microsoft’s rumored Xbox Series S, codenamed “Lockhart,” was leaked online including the price, design and release date, as well as the same for the Xbox Series X. With its thunder stolen from announcing this highly anticipated information at any sort of big reveal or event, Microsoft reacted humorously to the leak and has now confirmed it as truth.

After Windows Central stated that the leaks pointed to a smaller next-gen Xbox variant with a rumored cost of $300 and the beefier Xbox Series X at $500, both consoles were reportedly set to be released on November 10th, which is right on track for the officially announced window of the 2020 holiday season. The design of the Series S was leaked during this timeframe as well, featured in leaked promotional material that rapidly accumulated hundreds of thousands of views on social media platforms.
Upon the leak sweeping across the web, Microsoft officially announced the Xbox Series S, confirmed its price, release date and then, just this morning, did the same for the Series X. These two next-generation consoles will each hit stores on November 10th, with preorders going live on September 22nd. The $499 price tag for the Series X and $299 for the Series S can be paid for outright or through Microsoft’s new “Xbox All Access” program, which splits the total cost of the console, Game Pass Ultimate and Xbox Live into equal monthly installments across 24 months ($34.99 per month for the X).

The design of the Series S, much like we’ve seen with the PS5 parodies and Series X parodies, was met with a mixture of adoration and hate as some seemed to enjoy the minimalistic aesthetics while others loathed it. Design parodies appeared en masse across a range of sites and platforms following its reveal.

Despite the lackluster announcement due to the leak, partially the result of Microsoft dragging their feet on all this for so long, the company is reportedly set to hold a press event soon where they’ll showcase the next-gen consoles and reveal some new information ahead of the preorder date later this month.
