About

Bike-riding Monkey Kidnapping Toddler Video is a viral video featuring a kidnapping attempt perpetrated by a monkey. The video went viral in early May 2020.

Origin

On May 3rd, 2020, Storyful published a video by Jasa Supnaji. The video shows a bike-riding monkey approaching a family to perform a "topeng monyet," a type of "traditional entertainment" in Indonesias that roughly translates to "monkey mask."[1] The monkey grabs a child and begins to pull them down the street. Within moments, adults on the scene shout at the monkey until it frees the child. Within 24 hours, the video received more than 67,000 views (shown below).

Spread

That day, Twitter user @peteerh shared the video. The post received more than 32 million views, 122,000 likes and 41,000 retweets (shown below).

Redditor [2] iSlingShlong shared the video on the /r/PublicFreakout subreddit. The post received more than 86,000 points (93% upvoted) and 3,000 comments in less than two days.

Redditor[3] rustyshackleford193 shared an explanation for the video. They wrote:

OK so what really happens is those monkeys get put on a toy bike (that doesn't have an engine) and a collar with a rope on it. The owner then yanks the cord so the monkey flies from one end of the street to the other while steering.

Pretty cruel and that's probably why the monkey is so strung out. You can see the owner trying to pull back on the cord and he pulls the monkey while it hangs on to the kid, and in the start yanking the cord to propel the bike

Several media outlet reported on the video, including CTV,[1] Mirror,[3] Daily Mail,[4] Yahoo[5] and more.
