Miku Hatsune / Vocaloid (2007)

added Jun 24, 2009 at 08:41AM UTC

part of a series on Nico Nico Douga

This article is incomplete and in need of a total re-haul. Will be updated momentarily.

About

On August 17, 2007 the Miku Hatsune vocal synthesizer was released to the public. The name comes from the Japanese characters Hatsu (初, First), Ne (音, Sound), and Miku (未来, Future).

The voice data comes from sampling Japanese voice actress Saki Fujita. The software was tuned to create J-pop songs, but creating songs from other genres is possible.

History

Before Miku & other characters were added, Vocaloid was just an ordinary voice synthesizer intended for artificial backup singers. In 2007 Crypton Future Media released the Character Vocal Series for Vocaloid2, which gave each product an anime character profile. The first installment of the series was Miku.

Mutation

Japanese video site Nico Nico Douga is largely responsible for Miku’s popularity: users would post homemade music videos using songs created with the software (ed: similar to Microsoft Songsmith). The most widely recognized video is a super-deformed Miku, now known as Miku Hatchune, swinging a leek and singing llevan polkka (another popular internet meme). With the wide recognition of this video she has been “officially” associated with leeks. Soon Nico Nico Douga became the center to Vocaloid multimedia collaboration.

Hatsune Miku sings “Ievan Polkka” (see: leekspin)

An original song created by one Nico Douga user would spawn illustrations, remixes, and fan music videos. Other users would post unfinished songs and ask the community for help. As Miku’s popularity expanded, the number of songs orignally created, covered, and remixed featuring her reached well over 9000.

As Miku enters the western internet, she has been crossed with other memes and songs like “This is Sparta” and “Still Alive” (from “Portal”).

Mainstream Adoption

The Vocaloid sensation had become so large it spilled into mainstream. Some online artists were able to get Miku-centered albums signed by music labels. The first commercially available albums featuring Miku is Re:Package by livetune. Ryo, the artist of well known Miku-featured singles such as “Love is War”, “World is Mine”, and “Black Rock Shooter”, had his album Supercell signed by Sony Music Entertainment Japan. Both albums topped Oricon music charts on release.

The once unknown band “absorb” featured Miku in their single Sakura no Ame , which talks about graduation. Thanks to including Miku into the song, the single became immensely popular, and the band is now famous. In addition, 80 high schools in Japan used Sakura no Ame as their graduation song for the 2009 semester. The band played live at Yachiyoshouin High on February 24th.

Miku Hatsune has also been featured in several video games. In the Japanese version of PangYa, a user-campaign started in May 22, 2008 in which Miku would be one of the characters; she is now included in the game. Nintendo DS game 13-sai no Hello Work DS has Miku as one of the main characters. PSP game Hatsune Miku: Project Diva is to be released on July 2, 2009.

Leading figurine companies Good Smile Company and Max Factory created figures of Miku Hatsune and Black Rock Shooter.

Miku Hatsune won the 2008 Seiun Awards in the Free Genre catagory.

In late August 2009 Yamakan’s Ordet animation studio announced a “Black Rock Shooter” anime series due in Spring of 2010. The anime music video pilot is shown below:

Miku Miku Dance

A free standalone animation software called Miku Miku Dance was developed to animate a model of Miku Hatsune for creating music videos. The usage for the software has creatively expanded as some users created short films using MMD. Millions of videos utilizing the software can be seen on Nico Nico Douga and Youtube. As development progressed, the number of models expanded to include all Vocaloids as well as characters from unrelated anime series.

Other Vocaloids

Following Miku Hatsune in the Character Vocal Series is Ren and Len Kagamine, and later Luka Megurine. While more Vocaloids were released afterwards, Miku Hatsune still remains as the prominent character.

Fan-made Vocaloids

Inevitably, fanmade Vocaloids were created. while the number of “fictional” Vocaloids is large, there are some that stand out:

  • Black Rock Shooter

Originally by huke, this character initially had no relation to Vocaloids whatsoever. It wasn’t until ryo, a well known Miku music artist, thought Black Rock Shooter resembled Miku and arranged with huke to create the song “Black Rock Shooter”. The single hit 1# on the Nico charts for several weeks. The character would later be featured as a figure and its own anime series.

  • Haku Yowane / Voyakiloid

updating

  • Neru Akita

A delinquent and somewhat snobby, Neru Akita is a girl who always gets things done her way. She is often portrayed as a rival to Miku, or even as a Miku-poser. She was created by users on 2ch, when certain users posted things like “Got bored. Going to bed.” and “Gonna go to bed. Follow me guys!”, and other users created a personification for these people. Neru Akita is a wrdplay on “Got bored. Go to bed.”

“Yotsuba Koiwai”
“Loituma Girl”
“Caipirinha”
“Nyoro~n”

why not just start putting in things like Naruto characters or Bleach, they seem just as valid as this…
there are a lot of pictures of misty around from pokemon, why isnt that a meme?

im just saying i reckon we shud try to limit the amount of similar memes.

Not quite Richie. The definition of internet meme is hazy at best but one thing is certain: mutation.

A meme has to be changed around, remixed, parodied, etc.

The blue haired damsel in question may be a meme just because her Japanese fanbase tries to stick her visage into anything and everything.

Shoop Whoopkins compiled a huge list of these instances here.

Meme or not these debates are essential for the good of internet science.

The Japanese culture seems to create memes out of things in really interesting ways. Box art turns into masses of fan art online. Basically, the fans turned the company mascot into a virtual pop star controlled by the fans themselves, through their interactions online. Pretty amazing stuff.

Also, since people are SO confused when this is too easy to remember:
*Meiko is one of the first VOCALOIDs, from VOCALOID00 (Two zero’s). While her exact age is unknown, she appears to be in the 18-20 range, like KAITO, with her primary colour being red.
*KAITO is also from VOCALOID00, portrayed at 20. His primary colour is blue, and his character item is ice cream.
*Miku Hatsune (Hatsune Miku) is the most wide-spread and recognizable from VOCALOID2, so her voice is more human-like than Meiko and Kaito. Her primary colour is green, although her hair sometimes appears as blue or blue/green. She is 16, and her character item, as mentioned already, is leek, the spring onion.
*Rin/Len Kagamine (Kagamine Rin, Kagamine Len) are both 14, the youngest official VOCALOID2 installations. Their primary colour is yellow, and the character item for both of them is their AWESOMEFUL, yellow road roller (Which poor KAITO has been victom to more than once).

Just to clarify some things (big fan here, been following Vocaloid for a long time now):
The Vocaloid system was made in Britain by Yamaha. Yup, the system was actually in English. There are a lot of English Vocaloid singers now, most of them using the old Vocaloid 1 engine. The most famous is arguably LEON, because japanese fans liked him.

Meiko is the first japanese Vocaloid, and the first to have an anime cover art. However, her voice is still too robotic, and her fame didn’t quite rise. She doesn’t have any numeric label, but most fanarts depict a “00” on her chest. (More info on her later)

Kaito is the second Vocaloid. Kaito had an improved version of the Vocaloid 1 engine (it’s on the box: ver 1.1). (More info on him later)

One day, Crypton made a new Vocaloid engine- a second, updated version simply called Vocaloid 2. They released another engine, made to sing mostly J-pop songs. Manga artist KEI made an illustration of Miku, and Crypton used it as a box art.

The the leekspin came, and Miku skyrocketed into fame.

Crypton then made more Vocaloids, such as Rin and Len Kagamine and Luka Megurine. Fans picked up the older Vocaloid engines too, and Meiko and Kaito also became famous. Meiko also has a special case; there are TWO versions of her. One is the official, original box art, depict as a sake-loving person and a big sister at the same time. The other is Meiko16, a sixteen-year old version made by daigoman. She was made because daigoman modified the Meiko Vocaloid engine so that it would produce sing clearly and less robotic, but ended up having a “young” voice so Meiko16 was made. She is said to be more famous than the original, and is the proof comes from Miku Miku Dance, where Meiko16 is the model for Meiko.

Alongside Crypton, Internet Co. (yes they named their company Internet), also built Vocaloid 2 engine. These are Kamui Gakupo (who is voiced by Gackt), and Megumi (who is voiced by Ranka Lee). Megumi currently has the most updated version of the Vocaloid Engine.

BIG NOTE: Almost every Vocaloid creation isn’t official, so it’s 99% “fan-made.” The only things that are official are box arts and the manga Hatsune Mix made by KEI- which has the word “UNOFFICIAL” on its cover. Go figure.
